A Marriage of Inconvenience
Published in Paperback by New American Library (July, 1987)
Author: Diana Campbell

Stand in for Love
When Marietta Chase arrived at Twin Oaks, she expected to be greeted by her handsome husband-to-be, Roger Thorning, and introduced to the splendid mansion that would be her new home. Instead Mariett found waiting only Roger's notorious older brother, Christoher, the master of Twin Oaks and the man responsible for turning this great mansion into a gamblers' den and a bachelor's unkempt quarters. Marrietta would have fled-but she had nowhere to run. She would have said no to Christopher's inexplicable offer to marriage if she had not needed a home so badly. Marrietta walked down the marriage aisle at the side of a man she did not know but could only fear-and into the heart of a mystery she had to solve to find her way at last. A splendid story. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down

Couldn't put it down!
Diana Campbell is my favorite Regency author. Her characters are believable, likeable and humorous. This was the first of her Regencies that I read, and once I started it, I couldn't put it down, and immediately started looking for more. I've since reread all of them hundreds of times...I wouldn't part with any of them.

Masks of God Oriental Mythology
Published in Paperback by Penguin Putnam~childrens Hc ()
Author: Joseph Campbell
Average review score:

The Great Orient
In this book Campbell has covered the entire field
from Ancient Egypt via pre-Buddhist, Buddhist & post-Buddhist
India to China, Japan & Tibet.

Apart from a multitude of references, citations and amusing
legends illustrating his nominal concern (Mythologies)-the
center of this book (a part of "The Masks of God" tetralogy)
lies elsewhere. Essentailly, all Campbell's work (and "Oriental
Mythology", with its chapter 1 "Signatures of the four great
domains", is a particularly good example) is a predominantly
Jungian (with a few Freudian insights assimilated) comparative
analysis of the dominant traditional mindsets.

For instance, he sharply differentiates between two
"Western" archetypes (Jung again) & "loyalties":

1.Promethean hero-the Greco-Roman legacy
of ever-expanding and conquering being
2.Job-the Levantine legacy transmuted into Christianity

Or, "Eastern" loyalties of:

3.Yogi- ascetic absorbed in transcosmic cataleptic trance, as the "trademark" of India
4.Sage-essentially the Chinese ideal of harmony ("flowing" with Tao, or realizing
one's tao in society (Confucians))

Be as it may, this is a treasure trove of ideas, associations & insights.
I haven't encountered any richer or profounder work of late.
And, as a ghastly surprise, book ends with factual report on Chinese
communist invasion of Tibet (mutilations, castrations, sterilizations,
public executions & humiliations), as all the horrors from the "Bardo Thodhol"
have descended on our earthly reality. A horrendous reminder that
mythologies are not dead, dated nor irrelevant.

Amazing grace
This is the most impressive book I've ever read about mythology.Just buy it, and let it introduce you in a new world, full of spiritual knowledge.

Mr. Chilehead: Adventures in the Taste of Pain
Published in Paperback by ECW Press (01 May, 2003)
Author: James D. Campbell
Average review score:

A wonderful and funny account of chile pepper addiction
This is the funniest and best informed book about chiles and hot sauce that I have ever read. Most books give you recipes or histories of peppers, but Campbell's approach is truly different. He recounts his various quests for the hottest of hot sauces, and, in the course of his journey, he uses humor (frequently black humor) to provide information about all kinds of peppers, hot sauces, and the addictive lifestyle of those who have come to know the joys and sorrows of hot sauce. And, as a bonus, he includes some incredible recipes (yes, they are hot!) The book just looks great--it is small and beautiful, almost a little fetish object in its own right--and I love the way that Campbell obsesses over his addiction while maintaining his humanity. For anyhow who loves hot sauce and chile pepper pain, this is a unique read.

A wonderful narrative of the Chilehead lifestyle!
As a devout Chilehead, I've been waiting for someone to put into words the fiery affliction that I, and many countless others live with. James Campbell uses wit, introspect and a great command of the language to paint a picture of "Painland"; our home. He includes numerous facts and resources, such as the web site Pyropepper.com of which I had never heard, to give a well rounded narrative of life as a Chilehead. Bravo! I recommend this book for chile lovers of course, but also for anyone with a good sense of humor and love of a great read.

My Heart 2 Heart Diary Birthday & Address Book

I love this book!
This is a birthday/address book, and it's way cool. The top half of the book is where you write down birthdays that you want to remember. The bottom half of the book is the address book. There's space for you to write people's addresses, phone numbers, and even email addresses. The two halves of the book are very useful, because you can go to the birthday section on the top, and see who's birthday is coming up. Then you can go to the address section on the bottom, and look up their address. And you can do all that without having to lose your place! It's so easy, and really cool. At the back of the book, you can find great quotes to inspire you, your own zodiac astrology sign, each month's birthstones and flowers.. and even the history of the names of each month! There are very cute drawings all throughout the book too. Two thumbs way up! :)

My share of pot
Published in Unknown Binding by Dorrance ()

an excellent find
I am always on the prowl for good poetry- and by that I mean poetry that I can relate to, and makes me smile. When I was rummaging through my Dad's old books, I found this small gray volume. Once I started reading, I was hooked! My Dad said he received the book in college. Back in the 70s he was an RA and worked with writer Clarence Campbell, then a dean at his university. I know that if poetry can touch lives a generation apart, it deserves as much attention as it can get. Campbell's words on the future, love, and life in general are honest and remind me of a grandfather giving heartfelt advice to the younger generation. ...

Great Book, Great Man
This book was written by my grandfather. He was a wonderful man as well as a wonderful writer. He wrote poetry right up until his death, and this book, as well as his other book, The Promise of Shily, are two of the best poetry books I have ever read. I know I am biased, but I would strongly suggest this book to anyone. If you ever get the chance, check out this book.

Mythic Worlds, Modern Words: On the Art of James Joyce (Campbell, Joseph, Works.)
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (November, 1993)
Authors: Joseph Campbell and Edmund Epstein
Average review score:

A great book
From his first encounter with Joyce's writings in Paris in 1927, Campbell remained deeply involved with the works of Joyce. He gave many lectures on Joyce, frequently read from his works, and published a number of articles on Joyce's works. This book provides a survey of Campbell's Joycean studies by conflating his articles and representative lectures, from his obituary notice on the death of Joyce in 1941 to lectures delivered within a few years of Campbell's death. Also included, in the "Dialogues" section, is a selection of Campbell's responses to questions from members of the audience at some of his lectures. Questions from listeners seemed to fire Campbell, and some of these exchanges provide a deeper insight into the material presented in the formal lectures. This book contains both elementary material and advanced analysis of the work of Joyce; it is, therefore, both an introduction to Joyce's major works and a major contribution to Joyce criticism. The whole provides a representative portrait of Joseph Campbell as a critic of Joyce. 304 pp. (From the back cover).

The New Better Behavior in Dogs: A Guide to Solving All Your Dog Problems
Published in Paperback by Alpine Pubns (March, 1999)
Author: William E. Campbell
Average review score:

GREAT ! ...
Just finished reading the book ... didn't take long because it's well written, entertaining and organised ... The book flows from chapter to chapter, topic to topic with nary a hitch.

The author explains how a dog thinks! ... How a dog senses & relates to the world and it's human' pack ... Most important, the author explains how a dog learns ...

Campbell's training methods are both humane and effective ... Before we can train our dogs, we have to first train ourselves, to be more understanding, to be more flexible and tolerant ...

He emphasises an uncomfortable truth ... that there are few problem dogs, and far more problem owners! His chapter on "How People & the Environment create Behaviour Problems" made my ears go red with embarrassment ...*laughs* ...

The book deals with and offers practical solutions to almost every difficult situation a dog owner is likely to encounter ... Reading this book cannot but help me become a better trainer and friend to our Beagle and Labrador ...

Indeed, dogs are amazing animals ... they don't choose us, we choose them ... and the least we can do is try and learn to understand them ... and this book will help me do that ... its gonna be an interesting if not amazing journey ...

A wonderful book ...

PS ... Campbell recommends Idris Shah's 'The Sufis' as helpful reading ... and he is absolutely correct ...

Excellent
This is another book of those wonderful ones which deal with dog
problems and reach solutions, suitable for experts and beginners. Tens
of funny (but truly meaningful) illustrations show you how your dog
translates your behavior. That's how I saw them, humorous but
true. The book covers all phases of the development of the dog, from
the day you will bring it at home, to the day you will have the
perfect dog. One phrase I made banner from this book, what I was
always supporting: "I won't tell you that dogs are 'denning'
animals, so crate training your dog is 'natural'. That's not the
truth. The only denning dog or wolf is a pregnant [one,] and when she
and the pups leave their dens, they are plainly joyful to be out of
it!" People, please keep this in mind when you read in other
books about crates for your puppy.

The book begins with firstly
understanding your dog and their behavior, and how do they think,
their natural reactions and how they learn. Aggressive behavior, how
do dogs sense their world (vision, smell, hearing, taste, touch, pain
and so forth) How they communicate, their social development from life
in the litter to the day they join a human family. In chapter six, it
deals with puppy stuff, includes a puppy behavior test, from making
your selection to the arrival at home, house training and socializing.
Puppy training includes the basic: name recognition, commands like
come, sit, stay.

The second part of the book analyzes what causes a
dog to misbehave with first the human element (I liked this one. We
confuse our little friends and then wonder why do they misbehave!!)
How health and nutrition affect the dog; here a troubleshooting is
included: physical problem - associated behavior problems. What
follows this chapter is analyzing and treating the cause of the
problem, and techniques to avoid like electrical shock devices, cages
(dogs are not birds!)

In part three the author shows how to correct
behavior problems like aggression toward owners, how to introduce
babies and new pets to the established dog, barking and how to correct
it even when you are not at home. Other behavior problems and their
solutions include car sickness, car chasing, chewing, coprophagia,
digging, escaping, fearfulness, fighting with other dogs, jumping on
people, old age problems, over protectiveness and much much more.
When I finished the book I couldn't think of any dog problem which was
not included. In fact I even read about things I never encountered
before. With humane solutions and love, the author managed to write a
perfect book which guarantees ever lasting solutions. It is perhaps
the most wonderful book I read about dog behavior and how to solve the
problems. A big thanks to Mr. Campbell
